“Yesterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself.”~Rumi
I crave change. My entire adult-ish life, I’ve crave it. In my late teens and early 20’s I moved around a lot, Southern Cali to Norther AZ, to Colorado, to Northern Cali, then back south to Central Cali. In my late 20’s I exchanged the west coast for east coast. I prefer the east coast! I have a family now. The kid is in a decent school district which means moving around is no longer realistic. So, in order to satisfy the craving, I learned moving furniture around, changing the gardens, and I guess changing my hair color satisfies me!!!
So it really shouldn’t be a surprise that my business mission is constantly changing. Stagnation is not an option. This past year, I decided to increase my use of local ingredients. This isn’t a spur of the moment decision, I’ve been mulling it over for some time now. I don’t run a small business to satisfy someone else’s agenda I do it to fulfill my personal need. I need to make personal care products the way I want them done. I want local which means instead of using imported fats as my main saturated fat I am switching to local, grass fed tallow. The tallow I use is sourced right here in eastern PA. I know where it comes from, I know the process, and I feel confident about the sustainability of it. Your Grandmother made it this way, it’s a great soap!
Here are some reasons why I prefer tallow as a main soap ingredient:
- Tallow is sourced from small family farms right here in eastern PA, supporting small business and local economy benefits families
- Considered a byproduct of the meat trade. I consider it very valuable.
- Tallow creates a hard, creamy, mild bar of soap good for all skin types
- Replaces palm oil. Even “sustainable palm oil” is destroying habitat at an alarming rate killing off precious species, orangutan, rhino, tigers, and countless others.
These are my top reasons why I prefer tallow as the main ingredient in my soap recipe. There are other reasons why tallow is a wonderful ingredient. When science studies tallow, we look to the fatty acids and how they benefit skin at the molecular level. Apparently there are many benefits, anti aging, moisturizing, softening, regenerating, and anti inflammatory. Not many will enjoy the thought of applying a tallow moisturizer but for those who do, your skin will love it!
